Lubeck was born in the Netherlands in 1965 to parents Valentin “Tijn” and Nel Lubeck. Her father’s family originally left China and Indonesia for the Netherlands, where they eventually settled after spending World War II in Japanese internment camps.
In 1989, Lubeck relocated to New Zealand. When she started working as an international flight attendant with Air New Zealand in 1996, she became a member of the Flight Attendant and Related Services Association (FARSA). After 2009, she presided over FARSA for four years.
From 2012 to 2016, she was a member of Unison, the largest trade union in the UK. She belonged to Unison, the biggest trade union in the UK, from 2012 until 2016. As a part-time student, Lubeck continued her studies at Auckland University of Technology Law School and earned her degree in 2014. She was afterwards admitted to the bar as a barrister and solicitor of the High Court in February 2017.
On December 13, 2022, Lubeck announced that she will not be standing in the New Zealand general election of 2023. Lubeck’s departure was due to the fact that “it’s a tough job… there’s a lot of juggling to do.” She also stated her desire to spend more time with her family as well as the demands of her job on her health and travel as additional justifications for leaving.
