Martin Duffy became a member of the independent band Felt in 1985 after frontman Lawrence posted an advertisement for a guitarist in the Virgin Records store in Birmingham that asked, “Do you want to be a rock’n’roll star?” Duffy was also suggested by a man. As the group signed with Creation Records for 1986’s The Seventeenth Century and started what fans refer to as their imperial phase, Duffy’s sound became essential to the group in the mid-80s.
