Martin McGartland grew up in a council house close to Moyard, Ballymurphy, at the foot of the Black Mountain. His parents were divorced, and he had two sisters named Elizabeth and Catherine as well as a brother named Joe.
As he was a young lad in West Belfast, he joined with the bigger boys to throw stones to annoy the British Army.
During a brief court proceeding, the public learned who Gartland was. Afterwards, a shooter shot him six times, yet he was still alive.
