Almeyda, who was born and reared in Azul, Buenos Aires Province, started his professional career as Leonardo Astrada’s backup and subsequently as a starter with the local and national powerhouse Club Atlético River Plate. He was a member of the starting XI and contributed to the team’s 1996 Primera División and Copa Libertadores victories.
Over the following eight years, Almeyda played in the Italian Serie A for S.S. Lazio, Parma, and Inter Milan, in that order. He spent three seasons in Rome with Lazio, where he rapidly gained the city’s support after scoring the team’s lone goal of the 1999–2000 campaign—a 35-yard goal against Gianluigi Buffon of Parma—which assisted in the team’s Coppa Italia and league victories.
