Maya Widmaier-Picasso was the eldest child of Spanish painter Pablo Picasso and Marie-Thérèse Walter. She devoted a large portion of her life to protecting her father’s legacy and conducting study about it.
In 2016, Maya Widmaier-Picasso gained significant media attention when it appeared that she had sold Picasso’s 1931 Bust of a Woman, a portrait of her mother, to both the Qatari royal family and dealer Larry Gagosian simultaneously, creating a controversy.
Tragically, on December 20, 2022, Maya Widmaier-Picasso passed away at the age of 87 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France. She is survived by her children, Diana Widmaier Picasso, Olivier Widmaier Picasso, and her husband Pierre Widmaier.
