Leo Anthony Gallagher Jr., better known by his stage name Gallagher (July 24, 1946–November 11, 2022), was an American comedian who rose to fame in the 1980s for his prop of a watermelon on stage with a sledgehammer as part of an observational routine and signature act.

He did 100 to 200 shows every year for more than 30 years, smashing tens of thousands of melons with the sledgehammer he called the “Sledge-O-Matic.”

Gallagher was a comedian from Ireland and Croatia who worked in the United States. Gallagher’s observational and prop comedy acts were well-known, in addition to his propensity for stomping watermelons.

He also rose to prominence as a result of 13 one-hour comedy specials for Showtime and other popular HBO specials.

H.B. Plant High School served as his secondary school, and he later transferred to the University of South Florida to pursue his postsecondary education.

Despite making his professional acting debut in 1969, the comedian eventually earned a chemical engineering degree from the institution in 1970 along with a minor in English literature.

Gallagher died on November 11, 2022, in Palm Springs, California, of an undetermined cause of death. Age-wise, he was 76.
