Sergeant-at-arms for the Senate during the deadly brawl at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, Michael Stenger, passed away on Monday, according to authorities.

According to a source who spoke to Fox News congressional correspondent Chad Pergram, Stenger, 71, had cancer.

The Office of the Senate Sergeant at Arms and Doorkeeper announced that former Sergeant at Arms Michael C. Stenger passed away this morning with much regret.

No official cause of death was announced right away.

His death was not handled by the Virginia medical examiner, a spokeswoman said, indicating that it was not thought to be suspicious.

According to Fox News, Stenger had cancer.

Stenger, who was chosen to serve as sergeant-at-arms in 2018, resigned the day following the violence at the Capitol after receiving criticism from lawmakers for how he handled security on the morning of the 6th.

The cause of Stenger’s passing is yet unknown. The United States Capitol Police chose not to comment.
