Gorbachev was born in the village of Privolnoye, Stavropol Krai, a component republic of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic.
At the time, ethnic Russians and ethnic Ukrainians made up nearly equal portions of the population in Privolnoye. Gorbachev’s mother’s family were of ethnic Ukrainian descent and had come from Chernihiv; his paternal family were ethnic Russians who had arrived from Voronezh several generations before. His parents gave him the name Viktor when he was born, but his mother, an ardent Orthodox Christian, insisted that he receive the name Mikhail at a private baptism.
From 1988 to 1989, he served as the President of the Supreme Soviet, from 1989 to 1990, the Supreme Soviet itself, from 1985 to 1991, the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, and from 1990 to 1991, he served as the head of state of the Soviet Union. Gorbachev initially backed Marxism-Leninism, but by the beginning of the 1990s, he had switched to social democracy.
