In Alton, Illinois, 15 miles north of St. Louis, Davis was born into a wealthy African-American family. He has a younger brother named Vernon and a sister named Dorothy Mae.
His father, Miles Dewey Davis Jr., was a dentist, and his mother, Cleota Mae Henry, was a native Arkansan who played the violin and taught music.
Throughout his five-decade career, Davis pursued a range of creative avenues while anticipating some significant jazz stylistic breakthroughs. Although he behaved hastily due to heroin addiction, Davis recorded some of the first hard bop tunes while working for Prestige Records in the early 1950s.
He received a long-term deal with Columbia Records after presenting a critically acclaimed comeback performance at the Newport Jazz Festival. In 1955, he released the album Round About Midnight.
