At the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards in 2021, “Watermelon Sugar,” which is a song he co-wrote with Styles, Tyler Johnson, and Thomas Hull, was nominated for and won Best Pop Solo Performance. Rowland, Styles, Johnson, and Hull all shared the Brit Award for Song of the Year for “Watermelon Sugar” at the 2021 Brit Awards.
Ryan Nasci stepped in as audio engineer, when a session guitarist, unexpectedly pulled out of the recording sessions for the Harry Styles album.
He asked Rowland, with whom he was also sharing a room at the time, if he would be interested in the job, however, Rowland had never been in a studio before, according to Styles.
Ultimately, Rowland co-wrote nine songs for Harry Styles, including Styles’ lead single, “Sign of the Times,” which debuted at number four on the Billboard Hot 100.
Rowland also performed guitar and percussion on these tracks. Rowland joined Styles’ band for Harry Styles: Live on Tour following the album’s release and accompanied Styles as lead guitarist.
