She was born and raised in Port Harcourt, River State Nigeria. Mona has two brothers and three sisters.
She attended the Army Children’s GRA primary and then went on to the Archdeacon Crowther Memorial Girls’ School in Elelenwo, Port Harcourt for her Secondary level education.
She graduated from the University of Port Harcourt where she earned a degree in Theatre Arts.

She was married to Dejo Richards until they divorced in the year 2009. They have a daughter named Tamar. She married Victor Tonye Coker in 2016.

She began her acting career in the mid 1990s where she featured in the movie Pregnant Virgin while still in school. After graduation, she did the movie “Above The Law”.
She breakthrough when she was casted on the soap opera Heaven’s Gate. This brought her admiration from people all over the continent.
She became one of the first of four Nollywood actors to be featured on the cover of Hollywood Weekly Magazine in the year 2012. In November, 2014 Mona branched into Television with her own talk show “You & I with Monalisa”.
She has a column dubbed “Monalisa Code” in the Saturday edition of The Sun Newspapers where she writes on social issues and relationships.
She is also a consultant with Royal Arts Academy, a media school known for breeding new talents, in acting, directing, and screenwriting.
She was crowned the Face of Port Harcourt – Carnival Queen, in her hometown of Rivers State. She was also nominated for a Best Actress in a drama series at the Terracotta TV and Film Awards. She also won Best Actress, Afro Hollywood Award 2009 at the Monte Carlo Television Festival.
