Mpumi Somandla born Nompumelelo Claudia Mzobe is a South African singer, music writer and vocalist.

Mpumi Early Life and Education

She was raised by her  mother, who was a domestic worker as she lost her father at a very young age. She has four siblings. The family later moved to live in Ntuzuma Township.

She enrolled at the Durban University of Technology to pursue a degree in video technology but unfortunately had to drop out after one year of studying because of financial difficulties.

She later joined Mbongeni Ngema’s Academy of Performing Arts, where she perfected her music talent.

Mpumi Career

She started singing at a very young age and loved to perform wherever she found an audience since her primary school days.

She revealed that most record labels rejected her, which almost killed her dream. She had her break  when she was discovered by one of the country’s biggest producers Heavy K the Drumboss.

Heavy K provided her with a recording platform and helped her work on Umoya, which was a hit.


She has since then captured the hearts of South Africans and the rest of Africa with her smooth vocals.

Mpumi released her debut album titled ‘The Birth of Mpumi” in 2016. The album was packed with hits such as  ‘Ngize’ featuring Professor, Yahweh and featuring Zodwa, KSDrum, and Dj Micks.

In 2019, she featured on TNS’ runaway hit single Umona, arguably one of the biggest songs of her career.

She closed the year with a promise to drop her second album titled ‘Nompumelelo, on the 31st of July 2020.

On the 12th of June, she released a single off that album titled, ‘blackman’ featuring Bucie. As a result of the success of her debut album, Mpumi became a house hold name on South African music scenery.

On the 31st of July 2020, Mpumi released her much anticipated album, ‘Nompumelelo’.

The album includes features from Claudio and Kenza on ‘Uzobuya’ as well as ‘Blackman’ featuring the queen of Afro Soul, Bucie.
