Mulayam Singh Yadav was born on November 22, 1939, in Saifai village, Etawah district, Uttar Pradesh, India, to Murti Devi and Sughar Singh Yadav. His only son from his first wife, Malti Devi, is Akhilesh Yadav.
Mulayam was elected Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh for the first time in 1989. After the national government of V. P. Singh fell apart in November 1990, Yadav joined Chandra Shekhar’s Janata Dal (Socialist) party and remained chief minister with the support of the Indian National Congress (INC).
His government fell when the INC withdrew its support in April 1991 in the aftermath of national developments in which it had previously withdrawn support for Chandra Shekhar’s government.
In mid-1991, mid-term elections to the Uttar Pradesh assembly were held, and Mulayam Singh’s party lost power to the BJP.
Mulayam established his own Samajwadi Party in 1992. (Socialist Party). Mulayam formed an alliance with the Bahujan Samaj Party for the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections in November 1993.
The alliance of the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party prevented the BJP from retaking power in the state. With the support of the Congress and the Janata Dal, Yadav was elected Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.
