Donald Kerley, also known as Neil, played with West Adelaide for most of his fifteen-season league career (163 of 274 games, including Cup games), where he quickly gained a reputation as a player not to be trifled with on the football field.

Within three years, he had become club captain, established himself as a vital player on the South Australian interstate squad, and taken home the first of four West Adelaide Best and Fairest trophies.

Apart from South Australia’s appalling performance at the 1958 Melbourne carnival, Kerley’s only significant setback was the Blood ‘n Tars’ inability to capture a championship: three times in four seasons, West Adelaide faced Port Adelaide in the Grand Final but lost each time by a razor-thin margin.

After being named coach in 1961, Kerley had a stellar season, finishing third in the voting for the Magarey Medal, taking home the Trabilsie Medal as West’s best and fairest player, and – most satisfyingly of all – leading the team to its first championship since 1947 with a best on ground Grand Final performance against Norwood.
