In their Week 4 showdown at AT&T Stadium against the New England Patriots, the Dallas Cowboys are compounding the Patriots’ troubles with a series of unfortunate events.
The Patriots had already suffered a blow with the loss of star rookie cornerback Christian Gonzalez to a shoulder injury, and matters took a turn for the worse when their quarterback, Mac Jones, committed a trio of costly errors that had a significant impact on the scoreboard.
With less than two minutes remaining in the first half, Jones attempted a pass intended for receiver Kendrick Bourne, but it was intercepted by Cowboys cornerback DaRon Bland. Bland returned the interception for 54 yards, extending the Cowboys’ lead to 28-3. Following this, the Patriots attempted a fourth-down quarterback sneak, and although it seemed like Jones fell short of the first-down marker, his offensive line provided a strong push. However, on the subsequent play, Jones fumbled the ball during a second-and-12 attempt from the Patriots’ own eight-yard line. Adding to his woes, Jones was caught off guard by Dallas defender Dante Fowler from behind, resulting in Fowler stripping the ball from him, and Cowboys linebacker Leighton Vander Esch recovering the fumble.
But the Cowboys weren’t finished yet. Their field goal unit astutely recognized the Patriots’ 11-man blocking scheme on the extra-point attempt. Instead of the traditional kick, holder Bryan Anger dropped back and found defensive tackle Chauncey Golston for a two-point conversion.
To further compound the Patriots’ struggles, the Cowboys added a 23-yard field goal, leaving New England with a significant 21-3 deficit as the second quarter drew to a close, with Bland’s pick-six being the icing on the cake for Dallas.
