The Patriots are considering signing quarterback Bailey Zappe to their 53-man roster ahead of their game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, according to ESPN’s Mike Reiss. Zappe, a second-year quarterback, is poised to take on the role of Mac Jones’ primary backup for Week 1.

Reiss shared his thoughts on the quarterback situation, stating, “Bailey Zappe is well positioned to be the No. 2 for Sunday’s season opener.” He also hinted that it wouldn’t be surprising if Zappe were signed to the 53-man roster outright, rather than being elevated from the practice squad for just one game.

Zappe, a fourth-round draft pick in 2022, gained quite a following among Patriots fans last season when he stepped in for Jones. However, he was waived by the team in late August during roster cutdown day. Fortunately for Zappe, he re-signed with the team on the practice squad the following day. The plot thickened when the Patriots added former Carolina Panthers QB Matt Corral, a third-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, to the 53-man roster.

As of now, the Patriots’ 53-man roster is full, leaving fans to wonder how they will accommodate Zappe. Corral’s mysterious absence from practice on Friday has led to speculation about his status, considering he only joined the team nine days ago. It’s essential to note that the NFL recently clarified its new emergency quarterback rule, which New England can’t take advantage of.

All roster moves, including practice squad elevations, must be finalized by 4 p.m. ET on Saturday in preparation for Week 1. Therefore, it’s likely that this situation will be resolved before game day arrives.

The New England Patriots are scheduled to face the Philadelphia Eagles at Gillette Stadium at 4:25 p.m. on Sunday, and fans will be eagerly awaiting news of Zappe’s potential return to the active roster.
