According to a source, Trevor Siemian is scheduled to visit the Jets on Tuesday, and if everything goes well during the visit and he passes a physical examination, the team intends to sign him to the practice squad. This would mark Siemian’s second stint with the Jets, as he previously played for the team in 2019, although his tenure was cut short due to an ankle injury sustained during a game against the Browns on “Monday Night Football.”
Myles Garrett’s hit on Siemian during that game led to a season-ending ankle injury, and he only managed to throw six passes in that abbreviated start.
It’s important to clarify that signing Siemian to the practice squad is not an indication that he will immediately replace Zach Wilson as the starting quarterback. Siemian would use this time on the practice squad to familiarize himself with the team’s playbook and get up to speed with the Jets’ system before any potential consideration for the active roster.
The Jets have been in the market for a quarterback since Aaron Rodgers suffered a left Achilles tendon injury just four plays into the season. While they explored other options like Chad Henne and Brett Rypien, Siemian emerged as a potential addition.
Trevor Siemian, a seventh-round pick of the Denver Broncos in 2015, has significant NFL experience, having started 30 games and made appearances in five more. He has thrown for 7,027 yards, 42 touchdowns, and 28 interceptions during his career. Siemian has also had stints with the Vikings, Titans, Saints, and Bears. In 2021, he started one game for the Bears, coincidentally against the Jets, where he went 14-of-25 for 179 yards with a touchdown and an interception in a game won by the Jets.
However, it’s worth noting that Siemian has not won a game he started since 2017, and he most recently competed for a backup role with the Cincinnati Bengals during their training camp but lost out to Jake Browning.
