Miami Dolphins’ rookie running back Devon Achane is set to play a significant role in the 2023 NFL season due to a unique opportunity.

As the Miami Dolphins gear up for the 2023 NFL season, all eyes are on rookie running back Devon Achane. The young talent’s journey to the NFL is poised to take an intriguing turn, as he steps into a prominent role following an unexpected opportunity created by circumstances.

Who is Devon Achane?

Achane’s path to the NFL began with a significant move by the Dolphins during the previous season’s trade deadline. In a trade with the San Francisco 49ers, the Dolphins acquired former 49ers running back Jeff Wilson. Wilson joined the Dolphins, playing in eight games after the trade and making one start. However, as the 2023 season approaches, Wilson found himself placed on the Injured Reserve (IR) list, rendering him unavailable for the first four weeks of the season.

With Wilson sidelined, the Dolphins turned to Raheem Mostert, a familiar face who played in 16 of the Dolphins’ 17 games last season, making 14 starts. Mostert is set to be the clear RB1 as the season begins. However, the Dolphins’ history suggests they are open to utilizing an RB by committee approach, a strategy that has proven successful for them in the past. This approach aligns with the team’s philosophy, as they have not typically relied on an elite starting running back like some other NFL teams.

Rumors swirled among NFL insiders that the Dolphins were engaged in trade discussions with the Indianapolis Colts for star running back Jonathan Taylor. The reported asking price, which included Jaylen Waddle and more in return for Taylor, prompted the Dolphins to decline the trade proposal. While they did not secure Taylor, the Dolphins did draft Devon Achane, a rookie running back, in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Achane, despite battling a shoulder injury since August 21, showcased his undeniable talent during the preseason. Standing at five-foot-nine, he may not be the biggest player on the field, but his versatility and skill set have garnered attention. In his senior season at Texas A&M, Achane demonstrated his capabilities as a versatile running back, with 196 rushing attempts and 36 receptions. Drafted in the third round, the 21-year-old Achane is poised for a potentially significant role in the Dolphins’ offense.

If Achane is deemed healthy for Week 1, he could see considerable playing time as Miami’s running back room seeks to elevate its performance. The Dolphins kick off their 2023 season on Sunday, September 10, on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers, setting the stage for Achane’s debut in the NFL. His journey as a rookie in the league promises to be a captivating storyline in the upcoming season.
