Welsh artist Nicholas Evans, who was self-taught and from Aberdare, lived from 10 January 1907 until 5 February 2004. In the art world, he went by the name Nick Evans and signed all of his creations. His Pentecostalist spiritual convictions had an impact on his creative output.
Rhondda Cynon Taf’s Aberdare is where Evans was born. One of Evans’ primary school teachers noticed his flair for drawing and pushed him to do so. However, he eventually stopped since he was unable to purchase additional paper. At the age of 14, Evans started working as a miner, but this only lasted for three years before his father passed away in 1923, which had a significant impact on Evans. His mother had likewise labored underground.
He quit the mines at his mother’s request and trained as a railroad worker before landing a position as a Great Western Railway train engine driver for coal mining in the Cynon Valley. He joined the Welsh Apostolic Church and later served there as a lay preacher. John Harvey claims that Evans thought the ideas for his paintings came directly from God.
