On September 18, 2022, American engineer and educator Nick Holonyak Jr. passed dead (born November 3, 1928). He is most known for developing an LED in 1962 while working at General Electric’s research facility in Syracuse, New York, that produced visible red light rather than infrared radiation. He returned to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign after leaving General Electric in 1963 to finish his undergraduate degree there. He later attained the title of John Bardeen Endowed Chair Emeritus in Electrical and Computer Engineering and Physics.

Nick Holonyak, a young man, was born in Zeigler, Illinois. His parents were immigrants from Russia. His father was a miner of coal. For the first time as a member of his family, Holonyak attended formal education.

Before realizing that going to school was preferable to a life of hard labour, he once put in 30 straight hours at the Illinois Central Railroad.

Holonyak and his wife Katherine were together for more than 60 years. On September 18, 2022, he passed away in Urbana, Illinois, at the age of 93.
