Norman Yoshio Mineta was an American politician who passed away on May 3, 2022. Mineta was a first-generation Japanese American who was detained during WWII and went on to become one of the most visible Asian American political figures in the country.
He was also a mayor of a major city, a 10-term congressman, and a member of President George W. Bush’s Cabinet as Secretary of Transportation. In the Bush administration, he was the only Democratic Cabinet Secretary.
As a Democratic congressman and subsequently as a Cabinet member in Democratic and Republican administrations, Mr. Mineta was well-known for his expertise in the complicated laws that govern the country’s highways, railways, and airports.
In 1971, he became the first Asian American to lead a large American city, San Jose, which was in the midst of a recession at the time.
Months after his resignation in 2006, George W. Bush awarded Mr. Mineta the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honour. San Jose’s airport was named after him in 2001.
He was 90 years old at the time.
