Hines attended Garner Magnet High School in Garner, North Carolina. During his time playing high school football for the Trojans, he accumulated 6,242 rushing yards, 7,299 total yards, and 126 touchdowns.
His achievement of seven touchdowns in a single game twice is one of his 15 school records. He pledged to North Carolina State University in order to play collegiate football there. Hines played for NC State from 2015 to 2017 under head coach Dave Doeren. Nyheim As a high school sophomore in 2017, Hines racked up 1,112 yards and 12 touchdowns on 197 carries.
