Mills, who is of Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal Australian ancestry, was born and reared in Canberra. He was the third Indigenous basketball player to represent Australia’s national squad in 2007.
After playing two years of collegiate basketball for the Saint Mary’s Gaels, Mills was chosen by the Portland Trail Blazers with the 55th overall choice in the 2009 NBA Draft.
For two seasons, Mills was a member of the Portland Trail Blazers. He participated in basketball for the National Basketball League’s (NBL) Melbourne Tigers and the Chinese team Xinjiang Flying Tigers in 2011 while the NBA was on lockout.
In March 2012, Mills made his way back to the country and signed with the San Antonio Spurs. Off the bench, he developed into a valuable player that assisted the Spurs in their 2014 NBA title triumph.
