For “The Shadows,” a local Indigenous club that his parents founded, Mills started playing basketball when he was four years old. He used to be a ball boy for the Canberra Cannons of the National Basketball League (NBL). By the end of 2004, Mills had transferred to the Australian Institute of Sport and Lake Ginninderra College from Canberra’s Marist College.
On June 25, 2009, the Portland Trail Blazers made history by selecting Mills with the 55th overall choice, making him the first Saint Mary’s player taken since 1983 and the highest selection since 1961.
He reportedly turned down sizable offers from a number of European teams before signing a contract with the Melbourne Tigers on August 29, 2011.
