The University of Kansas is where Coker, a native of Lawrence, Kansas, studied painting and drawing before accepting a job creating greeting cards for Hallmark in the 1950s. He would remain in this position for quite some time.
He freelanced for numerous publications, including Esquire, Look, Good Housekeeping, and Playboy. For the latter publication, he was notably well-known for his adult-only parodies of the Peanuts comic strip.
Coker’s surviving wives are his stepdaughters Carol and Lee Smithson, as well as his wife of 33 years, Rosemary Smithson.
