Peggy Annette Whitson is a retired NASA astronaut and former NASA Chief Astronaut, she was born in the United States on February 9, 1960. Her first space mission took place in 2002, when she joined Expedition 5 for a prolonged stay inside the International Space Station. As the first female captain of the ISS, she began her second mission on October 10, 2007, as part of Expedition 16. She went on her third extended space mission and served as the International Space Station’s commander for Expedition 51 until June 1, 2017, when she turned over control to Fyodor Yurchikhin.
Whitson broke her own records for the most spacewalks by a woman and the oldest woman spacewalker. At 57 years old, she is also the oldest female astronaut in history. Whitson has spent a total of 60 hours, 21 minutes in space.
