Penelope Mary Mordaunt (born 4 March 1973), known colloquially as Penny Mordaunt, is a British politician who has been Leader of the House of Commons and Lord President of the Council since September 2022. She has been the Conservative Party’s Member of Parliament (MP) for Portsmouth North since May 2010.
Mordaunt served as Boris Johnson’s junior minister after previously serving in Theresa May’s Cabinet as Secretary of State for International Development from 2017 to 2019, and as Secretary of State for Defence from May to July 2019.
Mordaunt was chosen as the Conservative candidate to represent Portsmouth North in the 2005 general election in November 2003. She received a 5.5% swing to the Conservatives but was defeated by Labour candidate Sarah McCarthy-Fry by 1,139 votes. Mordaunt, a critic of women-only shortlists, worked as chief of staff for David Willetts’ failed leadership bid following the 2005 election.
