He was born in Sydney and went to Newington College from 1952 to 1955 before training to fly for Qantas and becoming a commercial fixed-wing and chopper pilot. His wife’s name is Janet Barter.

He was born in Sydney and studied there from 1952 to 1955.
On the advice of the government of Papua New Guinea, he was knighted in the 2001 New Year Honors.
