He has known by names like Peter the Great, Tourminator, Three-Pete and Peto. Peter was the youngest among his sister and three brothers. Growing up, he was taken care of by his sister while his parents take care of a small shop they owned in Zilina. Juraj Sagan, his older brother, is also a bicycle racer. He began riding bikes at nine years. In his junior years, he rode mountain bikes and road bikes. He drew much attention when he attended the Slovak Cup with a bicycle he borrowed from his sister.
