English professional motorcycle racer Phillip William Read, MBE, was born on 1st January 1939, in Bedfordshire, Luton and dead on 6 October 2022. From 1961 until 1976, Read participated in Grand Prix motorcycle racing. In the 125 cc, 250 cc, and 500 cc divisions, Read made history as the first competitor to win the world championship. Phil Read won seven FIM Grand Prix road racing world championships while sometimes being overshadowed by his contemporaneous, Mike Hailwood. For his accomplishments in motorcycling, Read was recognized as a FIM Legend in 2013.
Phil Read, a devoted road cyclist, was an apprentice fitter at Brown and Green in Luton, a company that makes industrial machinery. Read first road vehicle was a Velocette KSS, which he began riding in 1955 when he reached the UK’s legal minimum riding age of sixteen. His next vehicle was a BSA Gold Star DBD32. In 1958, while riding a Duke BSA Gold Star, Read began amateur short-circuit racing. Read won the Junior Manx Grand Prix in 1960 and the Junior (350cc) TT race in record time riding a Manx Norton. On Manx Nortons, he finished second in the 350cc and 500cc races at the 1961 North West 200 in Northern Ireland.
