Nur Jahan whose original name was Mehr-un-Nissa lived from 1577 – 18 December 1645. Nur Jaham was popularly known for being the twentieth wife and chief consort of the great Mughal emperor who was known as Jahangir. She remained wife to the emperor from 1620 until she died in the year 1627.

Nur Jahan became the most powerful empress in the Mughal Empire during her reign. Nur was effectively decisive and proactive than her husband the emperor.

Prior to marrying the emperor, Nur had previously been married. In the year 1594, when Nur Jahan was at age 17, she got married to her first husband called Ali Quli Istajlu who was also known as Sher Afghan Khan who was an adventurous Persian.

Sher was forced to leave his home in Persia after his first master Shah Ismail died. He later became a member of the Mughal army where served under the Emperors Akbar and Jahangir.

Emperor Akbar arranged Nur Jahan’s marriage with Sher Afgan as a reward for his loyal service to the empire. However, the marriage did not last as Sher was Layter Killad and Nur got married to Jahangir.
