He has also managed several clubs in Germany, including VfB Stuttgart, Hannover, and Schalke 04. Rangnick was most recently the coach of RB Leipzig. Rangnick earned the nickname “football professor” because he is a certified teacher and used to explain a team’s tactical approach on a blackboard during a television program.
Rangnick began studying sports and English at Stuttgart University in 1977. Rangnick had already spent a year as a midfielder for VfB Stuttgart’s amateur side at the time. Rangnick ended up in Brighton as part of a research project, joining the small club Southwick FC. After that, he returned to Germany and joined VfR Heilbronn in the highest amateur division. He then spent a year at SSV Ulm in 1846.
