William Ray Guy was born on December 22, 1949. Ray was a well-known American professional football player. Ray played as a punter for the Oakland / Los Angeles Raiders of the National Football League.

Ray Guy attended Thomson High School in Thomson Georgia. In school, Ray was a four-sport star. He played as a quarterback, safety, linebacker, and tailback. Aside from his role in kicking and punting, Ray Guy also led Thomson to the Georgia Class A state football championships. This he did in 1967 and 1968. Ray as well averaged 49.7 yards per punt in the year 1968. When he played basketball, Ray scored a total of 39 points in a Thomson basketball game the day after the 1968 state championship football game. This he did with no practice.

Guy was both a punter and a placekicker at the University of Southern Mississippi University. One time he was kicking a then-record 61-yard field goal in a snowstorm during a game in Utah.
