In Lake Forest, California, he founded and serves as senior pastor of Saddleback Church, an evangelical megachurch connected to the SBC.

Son of Jimmy and Dot Warren, Warren was born in San Jose, California.

His mother worked as a librarian in a high school; his father was a Baptist minister. He was raised in Ukiah, California, and attended Ukiah High School until he graduated in 1972.

While there, he started the first Christian club to ever exist on the campus of the school.

Warren earned his bachelor’s in arts from California Baptist University in Riverside, his master’s in divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, and his doctorate in ministry from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California.
