Robert M. Greenberg (born April 18, 1954, in Brooklyn, New York) is an American composer, pianist, and musicologist. Greenberg has written over 50 works for various instruments and voices, as well as a number of lecture series on music history and appreciation for The Great Courses. Greenberg has a B.A. He earned a master’s degree in music (magna cum laude) from Princeton University and a doctorate in music composition from the University of California, Berkeley, where he studied with Olly Wilson. Greenberg has taught at UC Berkeley, Cal State East Bay, and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he was chairman of the Department of Music History and Literature and Director of the Adult Extension Division. Dr. Greenberg is the Music Historian-in-Residence at San Francisco Performances at the moment.
Greenberg has recorded a number of lecture series on music history and appreciation for The Great Courses. Greenberg frequently connects musical topics to other areas such as history, politics, and other music from different eras. The Bangor Daily News referred to Greenberg as “the Elvis of music history and appreciation” because of his lifestyle and sense of humor. Greenberg works as an artistic advisor for Composers, Inc.

Greenberg said he took his family to China on business, and the experience was especially meaningful to his oldest son, Harrison, who returned with his father.
