Crowningburg, Rockne “Rocky” Freitas, who played offensive lineman for the Detroit Lions and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the National Football League from 1968 to 1978, was born on September 7, 1945, and died on June 8, 2022.

Freitas was picked in the third round of the 1967 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers, after playing college football at Oregon State University.

Following the 1972 season, he was named to the Pro Bowl. In 2003, the Indianapolis Colts selected his son Makoa in the NFL Draft.

Freitas went on to work with the Ke Alii Pauahi Foundation, Kamehameha Schools, and GRG Enterprises after retiring from the NFL.

He was also the chancellor of Hawai’i Community College for six years, as well as the University of Hawai’i System’s vice president for university relations and the University of Hawai’i at Mnoa’s associate sports director.

Freitas was influential in moving the University of Hawaii football team from the Western Athletic Conference to the Mountain West Conference during the 2010–2014 NCAA conference realignment as a vice president of the University of Hawaii System.

From 2013 until his resignation in 2015, Freitas served as chancellor of the University of Hawaii at West Oahu.
