In 1978, McMullen began working as a stock clerk in his local Kroger grocery while still a college student. The majority of his responsibilities included price-tagging products, grocery bagging, receiving merchandise, and operating the register.
In 1982, McMullen moved to Charlotte. He thereafter advanced to a job at the corporate headquarters as a financial analyst. At the age of 34, McMullen was chosen to be the chief financial officer. In 2003, McMullen was made vice chairman; in 2009, COO.
