Ronald Eugene Rivera, nicknamed “Riverboat Ron,” was born on January 7, 1962, and is the head coach of the National Football League’s Washington Commanders (NFL).
Rivera was an All-American linebacker for the Golden Bears while attending the University of California, Berkeley in the early 1980s.
Following graduation, he was picked in the second round of the 1984 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears, where he spent nine seasons, including as a part of the 1985 squad that won Super Bowl XX.

In 1997, Rivera started his coaching career with the Bears as their quality control coach.
Before returning to the Bears in 2004 as their defensive coordinator, Rivera spent two years as the linebackers coach for the Philadelphia Eagles. The next season, he helped linebacker Brian Urlacher earn Defensive Player of the Year honours and was voted Assistant Coach of the Year by the PFWA.
In Super Bowl XLI in 2006, the team participated. Around this period, Rivera also attended a couple of head coaching interviews. He began teaching linebackers for the San Diego Chargers in 2007, and a year later, he was elevated to defensive coordinator.
