Jordan Hicks and Kelly were teammates at Lakota West High School in West Chester, Ohio. He was a first-team all-conference and all-city pick on the offensive line in 2009 as a junior. He tore his Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) against rival Lakota East in the final game of his senior season, but he was still named to the third team of Division I All-Ohio. Despite being chosen, he was unable to participate in the Under Armour All-America Game due to a recent knee injury. ESPN gave Kelly a three-star rating and placed him as the No. 4 centre prospect in his class.
