British-American author Sir Ahmed Salman Rushdie was born on June 19, 1947, in India. His second book, Midnight’s Children, which received the Booker Prize in 1981.

When the author’s fourth book, The Satanic Verses, was published in 1988, Muslims were horrified because it was one of his most divisive works. On The Times’ 2008 list of the top 50 British novels since 1945, he came in at number 12.

Rushdie’s collection of essays, The Satanic Verses, was published by Penguin Books in 2005.

He talks about his resistance to the Racial and Religious Hatred Act, which the British government passed, in his contribution to the book Free Expression Is No Offense.

He established the PEN World Voices Festival and presided over the PEN American Center between 2004 and 2006.

He began his five-year appointment as the Distinguished Writer in Residence at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, in 2007.
