Arias was a La Equidad academy youth product. He was promoted to the senior squad in 2009 and made his professional debut against Deportes Tolima the same year. He quickly established himself as a regular for the Bogotá-based team, appearing in 28 games.
Santiago Arias outstanding accomplishments won him the chance to represent his country at the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup, which was held in Colombia. After a great period at his club and on the international stage, he moved to Portugal to join the ranks of Sporting CP in Lisbon.
