Farber emigrated to Australia in 1986 despite being born in Moscow, Russia. He is of Jewish origin. He started dancing when he was only thirteen and at the age of 17, Farber competed for Australia at the World Latin Championships and won the Australian Youth Latin Championships twice.
He again participated in the Australian Dancing with the Stars’ second season and the closing ceremony of the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. He was a pioneer of Burn the Floor’s Broadway cast. He was in a relationship with Emma Slater, a fellow Dancing with the Stars contestant, from 2011 to 2014, which he made known publicly after posting on his Instagram account in December 2015 that he and Slater were once again dating.
