The district includes parts of Wheaton, Palatine, Barrington, and five other counties in the western suburbs of Chicago.
Casten received a Bachelor of Arts in molecular biology and biochemistry from Middlebury College in 1993. He was born in Dublin, Ireland, to American parents, and was reared in Hartsdale, New York.
He subsequently worked as a scientist at the Tufts University School of Medicine for two years.
He graduated from Dartmouth College’s Thayer School of Engineering in 1998 with a Master of Engineering Management and a Master of Science in biochemical engineering.

According to rumours, the police were called to Casten’s home shortly before seven in the morning for a teenage girl who was not breathing.
