Berhalter was born in London, England, and raised in Columbus, Ohio. He played youth soccer with the Swedish club Hammarby IF in 2012 and 2013 while his father was in charge of the senior team.
Sebastian began participating in the Columbus Crew junior program in 2014, moving up the ranks while making 103 appearances and scoring 11 goals. In 2019 for the University of North Carolina Tar Heels, Berhalter participated in 16 collegiate soccer games.
For the 2019 season, Berhalter and Austin FC of Major League Soccer reached an agreement on a loan on March 3, 2021. On April 24 against the Colorado Rapids, he made his club debut, entering the game as a substitute during the team’s 3-1 triumph. Austin turned down Berhalter’s contract option after the 2021 campaign, and he moved back to Columbus.
