Sharron Davies grew up in Plymouth and Plymstock, Devon, where he was born. Davies has identical twin brothers. In Tavistock, Davies attended Plymstock Comprehensive School and Kelly College, which is now known as Mount Kelly. Davies’s first swimming lessons were provided by Devonport Royal Swimming Association. When Davies was eight years old, her family moved to the Port of Plymouth Swimming Association, and for the first year, Ray Bickley and her father Terry Davies, who later became a coach, coached her. Due to his outspokenness regarding East German cheating, Davies’s father was never chosen as an international coach. The Coaches Association Hall of Fame accepted him in 2021.
At the age of 11, Davies set a record by swimming for the British national team. Davies was chosen to represent Great Britain at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal at the age of 13. The following year, Davies won two bronze medals at the European Championships in 1977. The following year, at the age of 15, Davies won gold medals in the 200 and 400-meter individual medleys, as well as silver and bronze.
