Shonka was first requested to portray Big Mama Thornton off-screen in the Elvis film, but she was then asked to do so on-screen as well.
It was the perfect gig for the performer since she loves blues music.
She told WPLN, “I thought that in order to really commemorate her, I needed to draw from my own self-assurance and voice.”
She was certain that her voice was distinctive and that no one could sing as well as she did. This was demanded of me as our musical philosophy.

Thursday morning, police found her at her Nashville home after a neighbour’s report. One of Shonka’s children found her unresponsive in their house at 9:27 a.m. and sought aid from a neighbour.
Social media users honour the lady who portrayed Big Mama Thornton in Elvis. Despite not knowing what caused Shonka’s death, detectives have no criminal suspicions.
