Frederick Joseph Ward (December 30, 1942 – May 8, 2022) was an American actor and producer. Ward has had a long and varied career, which began in 1973 with a role in an Italian television film.

Escape from Alcatraz, The Right Stuff, Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins, Tremors and Tremors 2: Aftershocks, Henry & June, The Player, Swing Shift, and Short Cuts are among his films.

By blood, he’s Cherokee. Before acting, Ward served in the United States Air Force for three years. In Alaska, he also worked as a lumberjack, janitor, and short-order cook, breaking his nose three times.

He studied acting at New York’s Herbert Berghof Studio after serving in the US Air Force.

Ward went on to study acting in Rome and at the Herbert Berghof Studio. While in Italy, he worked as a mime and dubbed Italian films before making his acting debut in two Roberto Rossellini films.

In the early 1970s, Ward returned to the United States and worked in experimental theatre and on television.

For the first time in an American film, he played a cowboy in Hearts of the West (1975). His first notable role was in Clint Eastwood’s film Escape from Alcatraz as fellow escapee John Anglin.

Fred Ward’s first marriage, to Carla Evonne Stewart, ended in divorce the following year. His son Django Ward was the result of his second marriage to Silvia Ward. After their divorce, he married Marie-France Boisselle in 1995, and she filed for divorce in August 2013, but the couple reconciled later that year.
