On October 12, 1976, Simon Joseph Bridges, a former New Zealand politician and attorney, was born in Auckland. Simon is the youngest of six children. His father, who is of Mori and Pkeh ancestry, was a Baptist minister; his mother, a Pkeh from Waihi, was a primary school teacher.

Simon represented the Tauranga electorate as a member of parliament from 2008 until his resignation in May 2022. Over the course of his career, Bridges, who describes himself as a “compassionate conservative,” has held a number of Cabinet positions, most notably those of Minister of Transportation from 2014 to 2017 and Minister of Economic Development from 2016 to 2017.

From May to October 2017, Simon held the position of Leader of the House for a brief time. Bridges became the first person of Mori descent to lead a significant political party in New Zealand when he was chosen as the leader of the National Party on February 27, 2018.

However, due to unfavourable polls, Todd Muller succeeded him as party leader in May 2020 when he lost a challenge.
A by-election was called after Bridges declared his retirement from politics in March 2022.
