Jose Jorge Arriaga Rodriguez(Sin Cara) was born on September 5, 1977, in El Paso, Texas, to Mexican immigrant parents. Arriaga grew raised in El Segundo Barrio, El Paso, Texas. While pursuing his dream of becoming a professional wrestler, Arriaga worked in his grandfather’s funeral house in Juarez, Mexico. In Mexico, Sin Cara also obtained a degree in embalming and funeral director services. Arriaga went to El Paso Burges High School and was an undefeated state wrestling champion in 1996, earning MVP honors.
Arriaga began wrestling at Burges High School from 1992 until 1996, where Sin Cara finished third in the state of Texas in 1995 and was unbeaten in 1996. Sin Cara subsequently began a professional career, working for his family’s funeral company in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico under the ring name “Mistico” in the early 2000s. Whether or not this disguised character predated Luis Urive’s CMLL debut as Mistico, Paco Alonso has controlled the legal rights to the moniker “Mistico” since 1999, forcing Arriaga to change his name to “Mystico” or “Mistico de Juarez” to distinguish himself from the original. He defeated Nicho El Millonario on February 2, 2004, to win the WWA Middleweight Championship, but he was stripped of the title in March because Sin Cara was forced to cease competing in matches near the World Wrestling Association’s headquarters in Tijuana, Baja California.
