He was born and raised in Wigan, Lancashire, in a coalmining family, and attended St Matthew’s Church School and afterwards Wigan Grammar School.

Anderton served in the Royal Military Police for three years before joining the Manchester City Police force in 1953.

He began his career as a beat policeman in Manchester’s Moss Side neighbourhood before being noticed by then-Superintendent Robert Mark, who subsequently became the Metropolitan Police Commissioner.

Anderton climbed quickly through the Manchester City Police ranks while studying criminology at Manchester’s Victoria University. He rose through the ranks of Cheshire Constabulary’s chief superintendent and Leicestershire Constabulary’s assistant chief constable.

He was appointed deputy chief constable of the Greater Manchester Police in 1975. (GMP). We have not been able to verify this tale, thus we cannot tell for certain if the individual stated above is deceased.
